New Year's - 2009 |
The New Year has begun, so it seemed a good idea to update our viewers on what has been going on these last few months.
The Chapter Outing in June
|
Stift St. Nicola in Passau from the cloister |
Provost Bernhard and the brethren ask questions of the sister giving the tour. She was extremely informative. |
Sister explains the church of St. Nicola... and by the looks of it, she has a lot of explaining to do. |
|
A corner of the ceiling of Stift Suben (now a prison) - the canons in frock coats with their Sarrozia tied to the side - a baroque style for the canons! |
Stift Reichersberg was also on the tour. |
The Annual Men's Pilgrimage
This November saw the annual Men's Pilgrimage once again at the Stift. Men from all over the Archdiocese of Vienna came to bear witness to their faith and express their devotion to St. Leopold, Patron of Austria.

The brethren prepare to carry the head relic of St. Leopold out onto the Stiftsplatz for veneration. |
Novices and juniors are deputed to be the bearers.

Christmas
Christmas was both crazy and delightful, as it always is here (and everywhere else, probably). The brethren were all in good form and the liturgies centered all the celebrations on the mystery of the Incarnation of Christ. Dom Daniel hosted his annual party in his rooms on Christmas day, always a wonderful event.

Our host, Dom Daniel, looking very folkloric
|
And Dom Bruno made the Egg Nog! |
Special guests this Christmas were Gray Boyd of New York and Fr. Joseph Betschart. |
|
Ah Dom Gabriel... having a little too much fun
|
Dom Elias gets a picture as Alipius looks on (also folkloric). |
Dom Ignatius enjoys the festivities |
|
Maximilian looks on with suspicion as Josef plays with the flail. |
Surprise Daniel, it's a... level? Ah yes, practical gifts from Elias! |
Dom Nicolaus opening his present and feeling particularly Austrian. |
Stephanitag - the Feast of St. Stephen
A very important day in the Stift is the day after Christmas, the Feast of St. Stephen. St. Stephen is the patron saint of Vienna and of the cathedral. It is also a time when members of the community go out to their families, so it became a day when the juniorate would hold a special meal for itself, as many have no family locally. This year the tradition was upheld (it has since spread beyond just the confines of the juniorate). Dom Clemens prepared a huge rib roast (13 lbs) with gravy and Yorkshire Pudding. Dom Bruno made his famous mashed potatoes. Dom Daniel was put in charge of the cocktails before supper, Dom Gabriel was tasked with dessert and many others contributed as well to make a delightful evening of it.

Dom Daniel prepares his delicious if lethal concoctions |
Clemens tries to figure out the next step in the kitchen |
Gabriel engaged in Zen brownie making |
|
Bruno has prepared some glorious canapes - including those of pure pork fat! |

The Dean oversees all! |
|
It took a while to get it all to the table, but it was worth the wait |
Clearly a gravy fan! |
Anton makes sure all are supplied |
And after dinner, up in the Himmel... the fun continues.
