Augustini 2007 and the death of Dom Martin van Dam |
Lots has happened since the last update, so bear with us as we try to bring our loyal readers up to speed.
NB: Due to the large volume of material, a separate page will be uploaded next week (please God) with the pictures from Dom Josef's Mass of Thanksgiving
in Annandale, VA on September 9, 2007. Please stay tuned!
Augustini 2007 -the Clothing of the Novices
As is the custom here at Stift Klosterneuburg, the incoming class of novices was clothed in the habit of our canonry in the Chapter of St. Leopold, the original chapter house of the abbey before the First Vespers of St. Augustine. The brethren turned out in force to greet their new brothers.

Their long probation over, Bruno and Maximilian step forward to take their solemn vows as canons of Klosterneuburg and to bind themselves for life to the community. The community, in the person of Provost Bernhard, receives their vows and in so doing, binds the community to them.

The Surrounding Fun
Such momentous and wonderful occasions deserve to be celebrated and we certainly did. Family members of the newly professed and clothed came from far and near to be with us. We didn't want to leave them out of picture.

The Death of Dom Martin van Dam
Dom Martin was active and vigorous until his last days. Fittingly enough, Martin's last illness came while on his annual visit home to his beloved Netherlands. Born on September 14th, 1918 in Delft, Netherlands, into a very large family, he passed away in their presence just after his 89th birthday. His body was returned to the Stift for burial and many of his relatives came from the Netherlands to bid their final farewell.
Martin's priestly service through the years encompassed several of the Stift's parishes. In 1991 he returned to the Stift and functioned as guest master until 2005. Until this point he also continued to say Mass at the small church in Weidlingbach.
