Ordination to the Priesthood and First Mass of Rev. Dom Hugo Slaattelid |
What's New at Klosterneuburg
The community at Klosterneuburg has had much to celebrate these past weeks. On Sunday, May 8, 2005, Dom Hugo received his priestly orders at the hands of Bishop Jon Willem Gran, former bishop of Oslo and the bishop who ordained Hugo deacon last November. His family and friends were in attendance from Norway and added much to the festivities.
Before the ordination...
In recognition of his services to the community and the sacrifices he has made to be with us, Provost Bernhard awarded Bp. Gran with the Order of St. Leopold in gold. This order was once one of the orders granted by the imperial House of Habsburg, but with the fall of the empire it became a house order granted by the provost and chapter of Klosterneuburg. It was bestowed in the Red Salon of the prelature in a reception for the bishop and the Slaattelid family at the beginning of the ordination weekend.

The Ordination
Due to the restoration of the abbey church, Hugo's ordination had to take place in the nearby parish of St. Leopold. Hugo has had ties to the parish since he helped with the First Communion classes when he was a novice, and he was happy to be among friends for the event.

The First Sunday Mass
On Pentecost Sunday, Dom Hugo celebrated his first Sunday Mass. It was held in the Sebastianikapelle which was more than full for the occasion. Dom Markus preached an exceptional homily which was humorous, edifying, brief and in excellent German all at the same time, to the envy of...well, me: Clemens. Despite his natural nervousness, Hugo did a splendid job. His niece was also present, acting as an altar server, doubtless to make sure her uncle did honor to God in his celebration!
